Studies show that people who mediate just 20 minutes twice daily actually live longer by 23 per cent because it lowers stress and blood pressure and they are more alert.
Medical studies say the stillness created in the mind helps with stress by causing definite changes in the patterns of activity in the cerebral cortex in the brain called alpha waves. This is similar to waves found when you are calm, daydreaming or in sleep and they have a good effect on the body because they slow the heart and lower the blood pressure.
Symptoms of stress are heart pumping, dry mouth and sweaty palms and can be caused by almost anything. We react to life around us physically, mentally, emotionally and intuitively and meditation allows you to take the time out to let the body return to a balance.
Anyone can meditate and it does not have to have any spiritual connotations associated with it. The more you practice the easier it gets.
To master the skills of meditation can take from 6 months to one year of daily practice, even longer but the benefits are life long. You can join a group right here at OPEN MINDS either on a Monday for beginners or Wednesdays once a month if you are practiced. The Wednesday group is also a healing group. For back up you can learn from a CD (but make sure it is a guided meditation and not just music) or read books on the subject, however nothing compensates for real practice.
There are many different techniques from total body relaxation, staring at a candle (open-eyed – which is harder to do), mantras (concentration on a single word that creates a vibration), visualisation (an image in the mind) or simply watching your breathing.
OPEN MINDS runs a 6 week course from time to time
